Top 5 Tuesdays (T5T) Honors Best Actresses

Every year The Oscars honor the best of the best of the best. Or so they say. Awards are well... there are politics, and there's campaigning, and awards are subjective, etc. In short, there are some more deserving than others. This month, I'm going to honor the best of the best Oscars with my Top 5 Tuesdays. And today, I'm asking for your Top 5 Best Best Actresses. The most deserving of the coveted award. Here are mine.

1. Katherine Hepburn as Christina Drayton in Guess Who's Coming To Dinner

2.
Ellen Burstyn as Alice Hyatt in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore

3.
Meryl Streep as Sophie Zowistowska in Sophie's Choice

4.
Shirley MacClaine as Aurora Greenway in Terms Of Endearment

5.
Frances McDormand as Marge Gunderson in Fargo

  1. Solid List, Pipe. I don't think I would change it.

This would be my next five:

    Hilary Swank, Boys Don’t Cry
    Sissy Spacek, Coal Miner’s Daughter
Charlize Theron, Monster (Yes, she was great.)
    Faye Dunaway, Network
    Jane Fonda, Coming Home

  2. Good list.

Mine might look like this (not in any particular order)

Katharine Hepburn - Lion In Winter - just a commanding performance fully of steely, regal beauty.

Louise Fletcher - One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest - Terrifying role done subtely, understanded.

Charlize Theron - Monster - Awesome performance coupled with an awesome makeup transformation.

Helen Mirren - The Queen - As soon as I saw this I knew she would win it.

I would also like to list my most obnoxious overrated performance:

Helen Hunt - As Good As It Gets - C'mon ... she was playing her character from thar sitcom... and the chick from Twister.

    And most aggregiously overlooked performance:

Meryl Streep - Postcards From The Edge. She deserved the win here by showing off her perfect comic timing for the first time (which
she would do again in DEATH BECOMES HER and SHE DEVIL) and that angelic voice. As far as I'm concerned THIS is her most re-watchable performance.

  3. All great choices.

Streep would make my top 5. So would Charlize Theron, Sissy Spacek, and Louise Fletcher.

I would also add Vivien Leigh in Streetcar Named Desire.

  4. Oddly, I found the actresses harder to whittle down to five than the actors.

    Chronologically:
    Greer Garson, Mrs. Miniver
Susan Hayward, I Want to Live!
Katharine Hepburn, The Lion in Winter
    Meryl Streep, Sophie's Choice
Geraldine Page, The Trip to Bountiful
