Top 5 Tuesday (T5T) Hits The Road

What is it about a road trip movie that makes an okay movie suddenly great? Is it the camaraderie? Our ability to draw from personal experience? Or just the idea of the open road with lots of munchies. It can be a trip across the country, across the state or across the city, I really don't care. Just get in the car, and don't forget the Big Gulp and the Gardettos.

Give me your Top 5 Road Trip Movies. Here are mine in no particular order.

1. Fandango One of my all time favorites. The Groovers on the open road in Texas with a shit ton of beer. One of Kevin Costner's best performances.

2. Vacation We laugh at what we know is true. A family vacation on the road always seems like a good idea to the parents. Or at least an economical one. There are few road trips as funny and as terrifying as this one.

3. Dumb and Dumber A good lesson on why you should not visit gas station bathrooms in the middle of the night. Unless of course you're looking for some man love.

4. The Cannonball Run Burt, Dom, Farrah and the crazy doctor. Either that or I'll take Adrienne Barbeau and the Lamborghini.

5. Breakdown Not necessarily a happy movie, but a great thriller. I too would scour the Earth to find Kathleen Quinlan if she were my wife.

  1. No particular order here, too.

    1. Death Race 2000 - A road movie with a purpose (faster pussycat, kill, kill)

    2. Le Grand Voyage - A road movie that ends, on location, in Mecca. Touching and fascinating.

    3. Detour - Complete with cheezy road map illustration, jolly big spender, and wildcat femme fatale. What a psycho hitch hiker to do?

    4. Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle - Who knew going out for a few sliders would turn into a full-fledged road movie?

    5. Lost in America - A road movie stalled by by Julie Hagerty's suddenly discovered gambling addiction. "Twenty-two, twenty-two, come on back to me, come on back to me!"

Honorable Mention: Easy Rider. A sentimental favorite, though it doesn't hold up that well on second inspection.

  3. I like this one (but then, I like almost all the T5T).

    Here's some of mine:

Little Miss Sunshine - I would see Toni Collette in anything, and this was a good one.

Midnight Run - Not a vacation, but definitely a road trip. And planes, and trains..

Road to Morocco - Like most I think this is the funniest of the "Road" pictures, although Road to Utopia gets a nod here too.

And have to echo Marilyn on Death Race 2000 and Piper on Cannonball Run.

    Good choice Piper!

  4. marilyn,

Ah, Lost in America. Excellent choice. "Let's touch Indians."

As an advertising guy, I love the meeting with the casino manager.

  5. Harold and Kumar, Little Miss Sunshine, 28 Days Later.

  6. Marilyn's list is the best. Anyone who includes Little Miss Sunshine needs a Netflix membership and should start watching more movies immediately.

For me, a road movie is not about the destination, but how bonds between friends tighten or falter. Faltering is always the best, and one reason I think Fandango is still pretty good.

    Withnail and I

    Flirting With Disaster

    The Outlaw Josey Wales

    Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore

    #1 Vacation.
    #2 Pee Wee's Big Adventure.
    #3 Box of Moonlight
    #4 Planes Trains and Automobiles
#5- Death Proof (if that counts as a road trip movie)

  9. Good call on FANDANGO. That is one of my faves as well. After BULL DURHAM, I think that is Kevin Costner's best performance. There is such a great shift in tone towards the end of the film when all of the goofiness gives away to a kinda melancholic tone when the marriage ceremony happens. Great ending too. Nice call.

  10. How to choose a suitable target in cable and the cabal online alz? You should compensate him by giving him some cabal alz. Normal monsters; you have to lure a handful of monsters with cabal gold so that switching between them can be easier. There are many benefits to guild in cabal money. When you buy cabal alz, it is not still deal high amounts of damage.
