What Say You: The New Godzilla?
Here is a new trailer from producer J.J. Abrams. It had me until the Statue Of Liberty head which felt a bit too much like Independence Day. But besides that it's pretty damn cool. So here's the question: is it the new Godzilla or something completely different. The people on Youtube seem to think it's the new Godzilla.
WHAT SAY YOU?

Godzilla and the Blair Witch Project combined.
I dont think it will be as simple as the new Godzilla. Abrams is cooking something else.
I'm with you Shea. I think it's something else. Looks pretty cool. I wish everyone would stop beating up on the Statue Of Liberty.
New Godzilla? The best Godzilla must be the original.

Add one more to the "something else" column. I'm not sure what it will be, but it got my attention.
I didn't see it before The Transformers but it's playing somewhere. My son said he had seen it before. Maybe I missed it, but I don't think I would have missed it.
I saw it before Transformers.
I don't think it's Godzilla. That'd be hot, but would Abrams really take on Mission: Impossible, Star Trek, AND Godzilla?
I don't think so, at least not this close together.
There are a number of things that I think must be noted.
First of all, J.J. Abrams is the producer of the mystery project, but not the writer or the director.
As to Godzilla. There seems no evidence that Paramount has acquired those rights. It also has a mid-January release date, so I can't imagine that it will be anything with substantial blockbuster or franchise potential.
I stated that it was a J.J. Abrams produced project. The Paramount news is news to me and that seems to have cleared up the mystery.
I watched this a few days ago. My bro in-law was talking it up after seeing T-formers.
It looks pretty cool but not sure if its Godzilla. Maybe Loch Ness finally made it to NYC.
Hmmm. Well, it certainly COULD be Godzilla. Remember all the eggs and babies running around during the last Godzilla movie with Jean Reno and Matthew Broderick? However, like the rest of you I'm going to have to go with my gut which says something else. What that something might be? No clue.
Sorry about the confusion. I missed where you said that. I didn't mean any offense. It just seems like the notion of what his ideas are or how it fits into his body of work, and I'm not entirely sure that's the best way to approach the mystery.
I can't promise anything with the Godzilla property. What I know is TriStar made the '98 Godzilla. TriStar is now owned by Sony. I've heard nothing of a change in hands, nor has anyone else I've seen speculate on this, and it seems unlikely that Sony would have allowed one to happen.
The movie is definitely encouraging us to take is a giant monster feature of that style. I'm just not sure if that's a red herring of some kind. I still won't be surprised if the next one reveals something that will put that in a much different... possibly a broad comedy, especially since its in the mid-January dumping ground and not a season that suggests anything with real commercial or critical potential.
No offense taken Neil.
The truth is, I haven't done a whole bunch of research on this project, but I did know it was not written or directed by J.J. Abrams.
But you make a good point on how he has become larger than life and how his name suggests its his project when really it's written by Drew Goddard and directed by Matt Reeves. It's much like when Spielberg went on his Executive Producer frenzy and everyone thought it was a Spielberg picture when really it wasn't.
I like that this movie is going to come out the 18th of January. That doesn't suggest that it won't be big or that the studios aren't planning on it being big. It's interesting that the traditional schedule is getting mixed up a bit. But I agree with you that it's not going to be Godzilla. Something like it, but not Godzilla.
My girlfriend is also of the belief that there's an experiment with a different kind of January release going on here... in fact, she's quite strongly of that opinion, for whatever reason.
I'm still more than a little skeptical of that. I don't believe any studio is quite feeling prepared to dip their feet into a big movie with decent chances for January, which remains the ultimate movie dumping ground.
Hmmm... interesting, even tho' I don't really care for Abrams.
Whatever it is, it's one helluva marketing campaign. Here we are, in JULY, discussing a film being released in January. Give the marketing boys a raise for this one.
Joseph,
You're right. There's no doubt that the promoting of this movie is going to be something else. It seems that they're going to take a 'Lost' approach to the marketing of this film so it will be a very interesting mass-media approach. And a very non-traditional one at that.
I must say that roar is extremely suspicious.
I am all for giant monster movies, but I sincerely hope it is not another Godzilla. However, if that is the case, at least this style of storytelling will spare us from watching Matthew Broderick act like a scientist, or lame "Jurassic Park" knock-off sequences.

"Cloverfield" is as it's going now. No way that's the end title.
Two words: Space Giants.
It's so unexpected to do a movie version of a bad Japanese TV show. That's why it's so perfect. I first thought ThunderCats but that's way too predictable.
I can't wait. Goldar, Silvar and of course Gam.
I saw this website today. I'm sure others have too. Not much there but pics but could be more soon.

I'm thinkin' Mothra.
There's the hand-held party stuff. And then it goes outdoors and it reminds me of War of the Worlds.
The Statue of Liberty theme was perfect in Planet of the Apes. Now it's just a borrowed idea.
Bird Flu,
Man, how cool would that be. Space Giants. I would welcome that to the screens any day. I bought a bootleg DVD of some of the episodes and watch them with my son.
Brian,
You nailed it. After Planet of The Apes, no one can really do the Statue Of Liberty without being a Poser.
