Top 5 Tuesdays (T5T) Part 13.

I have done a fair amount of beating up on sequels and remakes this past week and jeez, I guess I feel kinda guilty. It is summer after all and since we all need to get comfy in our sequel/remake beds, let's not shy away from this. Let's instead embrace it like a warm fuzzy blanket. So give me your Top 5 Best remakes or sequels.

1. The Thing - This is still a showcase for some of the best special effects ever in a movie. And the paranoid theme is timely.

2. Godfather II - Yeah, yeah. Shocker.

3. Aliens - A rare case where the second story actually built on the previous and made the whole even better.

4. Cape Fear - A remake of a story that updates it and makes it creepier. "Hey Max, what about your books? Already read 'em."

5. Ocean's 11 - Soderbergh did an excellent job of capturing the cockiness of the first while still making the characters likable. Plus it's just a fun as hell movie. I watch this often and it always makes me want to wear a really big pinkie ring after.

There are others, I know. But I can't think today so this is what I got.

I was with you up until OCEANS 11.

Seeing the ads for 13, I don't know what it is about the films, and Soderbergh in particular (who I liked early on) that just makes me feel nauseous.

Moviezzz,

I could have easily switched out Ocean's 11 with Terminator 2, LOTR 2 or 3, The Color Of Money and whatnot.

I just really love Ocean's 11. It's such a better movie than the first. The first was so self indulgent, like a paid trip for Sinatra and all. What I love about Ocean's 11 and why I think that under any other director it would be a mess is that Soderbergh was able to capture the fun of the ensemble without it being so self indulgent. Ocean's 12, on the other hand, felt more self indulgent.

Good choices, Piper. I absolutely agree with you on The Thing and Ocean's Eleven. I also happen to think that Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a better film than Bedtime Story and, although not necessarily superior to the originals, some other remakes that I find are just as good as their predecessors(though admittedly different from them, which I think is key for any successful remake) are The Parent Trap, Freaky Friday, Father of the Bride and A Perfect Murder.

As far as sequels go, I can go with you on Aliens and Godfather both being excellent sequels (though I'm of the opinion the first ones are just a bit better) and I happen to think Empire Strikes Back outdid Star Wars, Addams Family Values was better than Addams Family, T2 was a superior sequel and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly far surpassed the first two "Dollar" movies. Also, I think all three Lord of the Rings films are of about equal quality.

The rest of time, though, I typically think the first ones are the best.

I am shocked - No "Empire Strikes Back??" Piper, you disappoint me ...

"Ocean's 11" sucked, man. "Ocean's 12" sucked even worse.

"The Thing" is an overlooked masterpiece.

LOL - garrett said "Return of the Jedi" ... he MUST be joking, right????
