In honor of Veterans Day yesterday, give me your Top 5 war movies. I admit up front that I don't have a vast knowledge of this category but I still have my favorites. What are yours?

1. Saving Private Ryan

2. M*A*S*H

3. Apocalypse Now

4. All Quiet On The Western Front

I'll go all WWII old school and in no particular order:

The Great Escape

The Bridge on the River Kwai

Tora Tora Tora

The Dirty Dozen

This is a tough one and I'm not even sure yet these are my 'top' 5, but off the top of my head:

Battleground
Das Boot
The Deer Hunter
The Longest Day

and for laughs and kinda cheating (does the Cold War count?):

Dr. Strangelove

I'll probably get killed for this but:

5. Three Kings

4. Jarhead

3. Starship Troopers

2. Full Metal Jacket

1. The Thin Red Line - I know a lot of people hate this film, but as pretentious and self-indulgent as it might seem, I love it. I rewatched Saving Private Ryan after seeing this one, and all of a sudden Spielberg's film seemed so superficial in comparison. But I know a lot is just my opinion

Megan,

Dr. Strangelove is good

Pacheco,

You read my mind. I was this close to putting Starship Troopers on my list. A great addition.

1. The Thin Red Line
2. Saving Private Ryan (wow, 2 in the same year?)
3. Battle of the Bulge (if only for that miraculously long overhead tracking shot as soldiers rush into a bombed out city)
4. Apocalypse Now
5. The Burmese Harp (recent viewing, but wow did it shoot up the charts)

Private Ryan was underwhelming in my book. It had stock performances by all involved.

1. The Thin Red Line - man vs. man, man vs. nature
2. Apocolypse Now - the horror
3. Paths of Glory - WWI was so neglected in film
4. Das Boot - the ending says so much about war
5. Starship Troopers - great references to WWII throughout
