STUCK ON YOU, TERMINATOR 3 : RISE OF THE MACHINES, THE WAYWARD CLOUD, MUNICH, BIKER BOYZ, RUSSIAN ARK...

Nothing seems to get beehives buzzing more than when a blogger sends out a smoke signal for some "list making"... so, why not try and send out a real MAMA of a cloud on a Friday when you know none of you are really working anyways.

As 2008 nears its close, people will be readying their year-end lists. But I'm jumping OVER that for now and heading right into what's gonna be common practice come next year: Top 10 lists for THE DECADE!

I know this one might create some hand-wringing and panic, but don't sweat it, it's just for fun. NOBODY IS GOING TO HOLD YOU TO THESE PICS. Just roll with it. Most of us are at work and don't have our comforting reference guides handy, so you will be required to rely on simple recall. That is fine.

Let loose on this Friday! Take your shirts off and give me your TOP 10 MOVIES OF THE 00's (... so far).

I'll start:

The New World
The Science of Sleep
Kung-Fu Hustle
The Darjeeling Limited
The Son (Le Fils)
The Day I Became A Woman
Femme Fatale
All or Nothing
Breakfast on Pluto
Inland Empire

Now bust yours out!!!

Look at the big brass balls on Fox.

Good Lord. It's not like it's a jeez, I've got these in my wallet that I carry around with me let me just whip them out and type them up.

This shit takes time.

But until that time, allow me to ask a question... What the hell with Femme Fatale???? It's the lesbo scene isn't it. You are this deep Fox. You can't see it, but there is very little space between my index finger and my thumb.

I'm a big ole DePalma fan, but I just couldn't get into it.

I have yet to see Kung-Fu Hustle but I need to because I was a big fan of Chan's Shaolin Soccer... or as I like to call it Siu lam juk kau - just don't be around when I say it because glass breaks close by.

I don't have a job. En alpha:

-- Atonement
-- Billy Elliot
-- Children of Men
-- Donnie Darko
-- The Dreamers*
-- The Fountain
-- Kill Bill (as a whole)
-- The Lord of the Rings (as a whole)
-- Moulin Rouge!
-- Spirited Away

Children of Men probably wins.

* - 2004 is such a crazy-excellent year for me that I can never decide on a BP between that, HoFD, Hero, ESOTSM and The Incredibles, so it's really representing that year (which is probz my favorite of the decade).

Thanks for playing J.D.!

Meanwhile Piper just spent the whole time going WAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH and winding me up over Femme Fatale (ie THE BEST MOVIE EVER!). Let me put it this way... if a young Godard was making mainstream movies today, Femme Fatale would be it. Suck on that sweetness you bitter man!!

OH YEAH... it's on now beeyotch!! And we're talking HBO Pay-Per-View type ON!

Fox said...

J.D. - For some reason I've never seen Billy Elliot. I don't know why, b/c I love Jamie Bell. (bonus: His new film Mister Foe is opening in my town today!)

Hero and ESOTSM are very worthy pics. The latter, especially, could easily get onto my final list when that time comes next year.

SEE IT, man. SEE IT NOW!!!!!

Or after your bitch fight with Piper... *muches on popcorn*

In no order and off the top of my head (I couldn't get Piper to write a list for me, either), so I'm bound to forget something I love...

Eternal Sunshine
Amelie
Memento
Kids of Dads (aka Children of Men)
V for Vendetta
Wall*E
There Will Be Blood
Pan's
Royal Tenenbaums
and....
Crouching Tiger

Leaving your blog to Fox while you are away seems to kind of be like leaving your house in the hands of your 16 year old...Pizza boxes all over the place, dishes piling up in the sink, etc.

Currently:

-Almost Famous (2000)
-O Brother Where Art Thou (2000)
-Amelie (2001)
-Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
-Punch Drunk Love (2002)
-Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004)
- The Incredibles (2004)
- Ocean's 12 (2004)
- Lady Vengeance (2005)
- You, The Living (2007)

Yes, I said Ocean's 12. I haven't seen You The Living (by Roy Andersson director of Songs From The Second Floor) since the one time I saw it a year ago, but it was stunning.

I didn't include any documentaries, but I could easily build a Top 10 of just them.

Aww... come on Megan! Please?!? :o(

How but just like five?? :o)

You don't even have to rank them!!

Bob-

It's like Risky Business up in here, ain't it? The house isn't as lavish, but the accommodations are more than generous, and I thank Piper for that.

However, it woulda been nice if he'd left me a Rebecca DeMornay type commenter to flirt with me.

Bob Turnbull said...

It just bugs me when Piper gets all whiny about someone messing with his stereo.

As for flirting, I don't think he gets it. I've tried to flirt with him before but he just ignores me...

Getting back to the lists - I always look at my results and think "I should've included this smaller film to give it some credit", but I can't deny those 10 are the films that I want to keep going back to.

J.D. said...

I'll be a Rebecca DeMornay type commentator for you, Fox. Even if it'll probably get you arrested.

This is tough. Off the top of my I'm coming up with Battlefield Earth, Catwoman, Gigli and Freddie Got Fingered but I'm sure I'll think of some more later.

Oooh, oooh Bad Boys II! Yeah dude, that's the winner right there.

MovieMan0283 said...

Oddly enough this seems to be a pretty popular theme lately - I've noticed some "best of the 2000s" posts popping up in the past week, even before you put this up. But I need the next year or so to catch up with all the new films I've been ignoring while watching classics instead.

Fox said...

Bob-

I like your list. It's pretty all over the place. But I've never heard of You, The Living. I will have to look that up.

J.D. -

Yeah, any Risque Business would be bad. We don't want Piper's haunt to get tapped by any authorities.

Jonathan Lapper-

On your blog you usually write about pre-60's films so I never got a good sense of your contemporary tastes. It's nice to finally get a peek into that.

But Freddie Got Fingered?? I think you may be reaching a bit there.

Piper said...

Careful J.D., you might just get yourself signed up for guest blogging.

Fox, I don't care what you do just make sure my Crystal Egg don't have no cracks in it.

Okay, here are a few.

Royal Tenenbaums
Punch Drunk Love
Old Boy
Brick
High Fidelity
Mulholland Drive
Spirited Away
Lord Of The Rings
Les Incroyable (The Incredibles) I just had to add some French in there to keep up the snoot level.

By the way Fox, you're doing a great job. Thanks

Here's my 2c worth:
- Hero (China)
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- Memento
- Lord of the Rings (trilogy)
- Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (China)
- The Lives of Others (Germany)
- City of God (Brazil, 4 Oscar noms but not foreign film!)
- Open Range (the best western in 15 yrs)
- Minority Report (an overlooked Spielberg?)
- V for Vendetta (Warshoski's best)
- Run Lola Run

ok, so I did 11, in case any are late 90's... the Jman

I did a piece on August 16th that addressed this challenge quite completely. You can look at it at http://filmicability.blogspot.com/2008/08/best-movies-of-2000s.html

My quick and very tentative list:

1. THERE WILL BE BLOOD
2. CHILDREN OF MEN
3. GOSFORD PARK
4. THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY
5. SILENT LIGHT
6. MULHOLLAND DR.
7. DOGVILLE
8. CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON
9. DANCER IN THE DARK
10. THE HOURS

I also agree about YOU, THE LIVING. I wouldn't put it in the top 10 of the decade, but it's a shame it still hasn't received US distribution. It's a fine film.

Honorable mentions to FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, SPIRITED AWAY, MUNICH, and MOULIN ROUGE.

Damn this was hard...I'm not looking forward to the 2009 retrospectives.
