Please Help Me Understand

The movie The Producers was created by Mel Brooks in 1968.

Then it was made into a musical that goes to Broadway and becomes a hit.

Then they remake the movie that was so good that they made a musical from it. Only they're making it more like the musical that is based on the original movie that was good to begin with.

The movie Hairspray was created in 1988 by John Waters.

Then it was made into a musical that goes to Broadway and becomes a hit.

Now they're remaking the movie that was so good that they made a musical from it. But they're making it more like the musical that is based on the original movie that was good to begin with.

If I may, I would finish off your sentence in the first instance this way:

"...based on the original movie that was good to begin with and it sucked."

And in the second instance this way:

"...based on the original movie that was good to begin with and it will likely suck."

No need to thank me; I'm here to help.

Thanks Burbanked.

I've steered clear of the the remake of The Producers for one simple reason... it didn't need a remake.

And I will stay away from the remake of Hairspray for one simple reason... I do not want to see John Travolta in drag.

"... I do not want to see John Travolta in drag."

Have you seen any of the on-set pictures that have floated around? It's pretty terrifying and makes one long for the long-past heady days of good sense and cinematic brilliance like Battlefield Earth.

It actually brings up an interesting question: Travolta was gone from the public eye for a long time before his career was resurrected by Pulp Fiction, right? And we can probably agree that he's done all kinds of crazy awful cinema since then.

So...maybe he should have just been left alone in his obscurity, because he certainly hasn't invested his audience's goodwill all that well.

Yeah, I wrote about Travolta's horrible career recently in my Hollywoods Short Term Memory post.

The fact that he did a first-class turd written by a guy who created a fake religion should have Travolta black-listed from ever making a movie again.

...yet somehow it doesn't. Do you suppose that that says something about Hollywood?
